Speaker

Rev. Dr. Karen Georgia A. Thompson General Minister and President / Chief Executive Officer

The Rev. Dr. Karen Georgia A. Thompson is the General Minister and President of the United Church of Christ. Rev. Thompson is the first woman and first woman of African descent to serve as leader of the denomination.

Prior to this call, Rev. Thompson served in the national setting of the United Church of Christ for 14 years – two years as Minister for Racial Justice, eight years as Minister for Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations and four years as the Associate General Minister for Wider Church Ministries and Co-Executive for Global Ministries. She was elected as AGM in 2019. Her passion for justice and equity moved her work on behalf of the UCC into a global context, affording the opportunity to participate globally in efforts to reduce the marginalization experienced by African descendant peoples and other communities globally.

Before joining the national staff, Rev. Thompson served in the Florida Conference United Church of Christ as a Pastor and on the Conference staff as the Minister for Disaster Response and Recovery. She also worked in the nonprofit arena for over 10 years in senior leaderships positions.

Rev. Thompson earned a Bachelor of Arts from Brooklyn College in New York, a Master’s in Public Administration from North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC, and a Masters of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary in New York. She also studied Public Policy at Duke University and earned her Doctorate in Ministry at Seattle University. She was awarded an honorary doctorate from Heidelberg University.

2024 Annual Meeting Mission Project

Our mission project this year is to make and distribute Period Packs. Period poverty is limited or inadequate access to menstrual products because of financial constraints or negative stigmas. Students, people experiencing homelessness, and people with disabilities are at a higher risk of period poverty. Nearly two-thirds of women in the U.S. with a low income could not afford period products in the last year, and nearly half of all women in the U.S. with a low income had to choose between buying food or period products. We are asking annual meeting participants to donate supplies and to help us make Period Packs during our annual meeting. The supplies needed are:

· Boxes of pads (regular and extra-absorbent)

· Boxes of tampons (regular and extra-absorbent)

· Travel packs of personal wipes

· 2-fl. oz. bottles of hand sanitizer

· 1-gallon-size zip-lock bags

We will use these donated supplies to make Period Packs. Some of the packs will be donated to Centre Safe, an organization in State College with the mission of empowering survivors of sexual or domestic violence, and working toward the elimination of such violence. In addition to Period Packs, a portion of our Sunday offering will go to Centre Safe as well. The remaining Period Packs will be divided between the four Pennsylvania UCC conferences to be distributed to local food banks, women’s shelters, and other organizations who can dispense them to those in need. Please sign up to donate supplies, this will help prevent us from having too much of one item and not enough of another. Thank you.

Thank you to our sponsors from the UCC Financial Ministries: Cornerstone Fund, Insurance Board, The Pension Board, United Church Funds and Church Building & Loan.

  • Preparing for the Transition to Retirement

Preparing for the Transition to Retirement

Presented by our sponsors the Pension Board.
The transition to retirement is a unique and personal experience for every minister. On the one hand, your lifelong commitment to your calling may feel very different as your day-to-day activities in service to your church and community begin to wind down. On the other hand, there are several key decisions you need to make. How well do you understand your Social Security benefits, your annuity options at retirement, or your life insurance needs? It can feel overwhelming. And if you answered “not very well”,  you are not alone when it comes to planning ahead for these and other important decisions.

After countless years of service, ministers deserve the dignity of a secure retirement, as well as the space and grace to reimagine how they may wish continue to answer their lifelong calling in this new stage of their life without the burden of worrying about essential resources. Join us for our workshop, Preparing for the Transition to Retirement, to learn more about the possibilities ahead. We will share stories from retired ministers and discuss pragmatic steps you can take to prepare the resources you will need to live comfortable and securely.
